John R. Justice Loan Repayment Program authorization in
Public Law 110-315, Part JJ, dated August 14, 2008,
42 USC 3797cc-21, provides loan repayment assistance for state
and federal public defenders and state prosecutors who agree
to remain employed as defenders and prosecutors for at least
three years. Repayment benefits cannot exceed $10,000 in a
calendar year with a total aggregate not to exceed $60,000.
Student loans that are eligible, made under Part B of Title IV
of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, may be repaid
by direct payments on behalf of the borrower. The Federal
Family Education Loan Program and the Direct Loan Program are
eligible for these funds. Loans not eligible within the programs
are:
- Loans in Default
- Parent PLUS loans
- Private loans
- Commercial loans
- Alternative student loans
