Foreign Language Requirements

Florida Academic Scholars and Florida Medallion Scholars academic course requirements include foreign language. To meet the foreign language requirement for either the Florida Academic Scholars or the Florida Medallion Scholars award, students must demonstrate foreign language proficiency at a level equal to two years of high school foreign language (in the same language) or American Sign Language coursework (see Comprehensive Course Table).  This requirement can be met in one of five ways.

  1. Students may complete two years of high school coursework in the same foreign or sign language.  If the student meets the requirement through this method, the course numbers must be entered on the student's transcript.
  2. Dual Enrollment - The Articulation Coordinating Committee (ACC) and the State Board of Education has approved all four-credit foreign language courses to receive one high school credit, beginning with high school year 2002-03. The Bright Futures Comprehensive Course Table (CCT) identifies, by course number, those foreign language courses that earn one (1.0) high school credit and those that earn .5 high school credit.

Students may also meet the requirement in one of the ways listed below. For methods 3 through 5, the Bright Futures Foreign Language Waiver (0791920) must be entered in a student's transcript.

  1. Complete 1.0 high school credit of an intermediate level dual enrollment course or the second year of a high school level course in a foreign language.

Note: For methods 4 and 5 below, documentation of proficiency level must be kept in the student's cumulative folder.

  1. Earn at least the scores indicated below on a CLEP, AP, SAT-II or Departmental Test.
