Frequently Asked Questions About Public Service Assignment
and Bright Futures Qualification
Public service assignment is defined as the occupational assignment of a Florida resident employed by the
United States Government or State of Florida, who as a condition of employment, is located and working outside the
state of Florida.
- What types of employment qualify as public service assignment?
Employment by the US government, such as (not a comprehensive list):
- US Department of State
- US Department of Defense
- US Embassy
- US Department of Justice
- US Department of Immigration
- Government officials assigned outside the state of Florida (such as Congressmen)
Employment by the Florida government such as (not a comprehensive list):
- Florida Department of State
- Florida Department of Transportation
- Governor’s Office of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development

What types of employment do not qualify as public service assignment?
- Companies who contract with the US government. These include persons who work for a company
who has contracted with the US or state of Florida government.
- Red Cross
- Peace Corps
- Missionaries

What forms of documentation will be accepted as proof of public service assignment?
- Copy of Leave and Earnings Statement* (LES) to confirm public
service assignment with the US Government, or
- Copy of State of Florida employee Earnings Statement* (LES) to confirm public
service assignment with the Florida government
*from any month of the student’s last year in high school
Persons who work directly for the US Government or state of Florida government can provide LESs from
their respective governments. No other form of documentation will be accepted to document public service assignment.
